"Why Does My Dog Do That"
The following may help answer some often asked questions about the behaviors of our dogs:
Why do dogs eat cat poop from the litter box? The short answer would be simply that a cat’s diet is richer in fat and protein, so may seem an instinctive addition to his own diet.
The reason our dogs chew our socks and shoes (aside from a teething instinct), can have its roots in a dog’s boredom, anxiety and a need to get your attention, as well. It helps to provide an assortment of safe chewing toys at any stage of life, positively reinforcing good behavior, and giving them more attention.
.
Is digging normal behavior? This behavior is more prevalent with some breeds more than others. Your dog may actually be burying a bone to dig up at a later time. Also, the soil may be cool relief on a hot, summer day. If necessary, there are non-toxic sprays as a deterrent to protect flowerbeds and garden areas.
Many people ask why a dog jumps up on visitors. As puppies this is normal “greeting” behavior. Even in puppy hood dogs can be re-trained to avoid being perceived as a threat to children and adults as they mature.
Why do dogs put their heads out the window? We know they enjoy the fresh air, but they are also picking up sights and scents. Protective glasses or goggles for these dogs can be helpful against the potential dangers to a dog’s eyes. Best of all, keep the windows closed and the air conditioner activated.
Many dogs are frightened by thunder and feel trapped. Loud noises such as thunder and fireworks pose a threat to their safety; this reduces them to cowering, whimpering, pacing and even crying in their state of distress. My Boxer immediately ascends on his dog ramp and pet stairs and burrows into the sofa for the duration.
You knew this was an inevitable question: Why do dogs roll in their poop or that of other dogs and animals, as well? They are instinctively camouflaging their own scent (often right after bath time). Some owners have taken to using water spray bottles on their dogs when they can; others have used citronella collars on their dogs to deter them from this behavior.
Is chasing his tail harmful to him? If not excessive, downplay this in your response, to avoid encouraging this behavior.
Dog owners ask why their dogs hump. This may be for sexual reasons, reasons of boredom or anxiety, or for lack of exercise and to seek attention. Dominance can also be the motivation. When this behavior becomes compulsive, it is time to seek help from your veterinarian, or a good behavior specialist.
