Why Do Dogs Whine at Night??
This issue can often be resolved by the process of elimination, as relates to a dog’s age, health, or his current environment. Puppies whine for attention or to be fed, or they need to relieve themselves. On occasion severe weather conditions can trigger a dog’s state of distress and threaten his sense of security.
At night he would whine in his doggy bed; then I set up his Puppy Stairs and pet ramps so he could reach my bed and join me if that was what he wanted…it was. Soon he had arranged himself halfway under the blankets with his body up against mine. We both slept soundly then.
A female dog might whine during her pregnancy, feeling sensitive and vulnerable. Many dogs benefit from hearing music on a radio in their owner’s absence. I liked doing this and occasionally calling my dog when I was away. I would speak his name as part of my voice mail message to him, making sure to use a calm, reassuring tone before ending the call. I also left an item of my clothing with my scent in his favorite napping place.
Sometimes more exercise and playtime helps both pet and owner, even if only for brief periods of shared time. Dogs get cold, too, as temperatures drop. A warm pad or light blanket can be very beneficial to your pet. If he is alone a great many hours, have you considered adding another canine member to the pack? They can romp and play on their Puppy Stairs and pet ramps throughout the day, able to reach their special places to rest and nap. So, we have eliminated quite a few reasons for a dog’s whining at night.
