The Bulldog (no longer “bullish”)

dog-34.gif

He is well recognized as a big, heavy, muscular presence with a wrinkled face and pushed-in nose, with characteristic folds called “rope” above the nose, drooping lips, pointed teeth and hanging neck skin. Does he sound familiar now? He also has a unique, naturally short, curled tail.

Sometimes bulldogs appear to have a “sour” expression, but they are basically mellow and obedient in the home. Although their need for exercise is not great, they need their daily walks and are capable of moving quickly for short distances. They are understandably well suited to urban life and apartment living.

Sociable and friendly by nature, they also have their stubborn moments. Statistically, although not high on the work/intelligence quotient, they rate high for their courage, kindness and lack of aggression. Some males can be a little more aggressive if their breeding has not been diligent in this area.

My friends’ Bulldog displays a great attachment to home and family, getting along well with their children and other pets and dogs. If he had his way he would prefer to sleep on someone’s lap, rather than chasing a ball in their yard. He has been pampered, and rightly so, to protect against hip and joint afflictions to which he is inclined, using his large ramp indoors and another to get into their vehicle.

At 6 years of age he is turning the corner now to his senior years and doing well, keeping mobile, trim and enjoying life with the family. There is no getting away from his “heavy breathing”, snorting and snoring habits, common to short-faced breeds, and his perpetual (somewhat humorous) “farting” propensity. Oh well!

He has a wonderful disposition, which certainly overrides these traits for many Bulldog fans, as my friends are. This a breed that tends to become easily overheated; they require plenty of shade, drinking water and good ventilation and even air conditioning in hot weather. Interestingly, they are slow to mature, taking more than 2 ½ years to do so.

This is a much-loved and popular mascot, officially for the U.S. Marine Corps and many universities. Now veterinarian recommended dog ramps make his life easier, allowing him to lounge and recline for as many hours as possible on the sofa with family members.
