The Basset Hound (devoted family companion)
Second only to the Bloodhound for its sense of smell, the Basset is a distinctive breed with short legs and a long, low body. This is a dog, relatively large in size, with a solid physical structure and hanging elastic skin, giving him a sad appearance. He shares the extremely long, trailing ears of his ancestor, the Bloodhound, and an outstanding tracking ability. Keep him on a leash to prevent his taking off in pursuit of a scent that is capturing his attention.
This is a dog both gentle and sweet natured, with an even temperament around adults, children and other pets. His reputation is as a loyal, happy family dog. Being left alone does not suit his nature. Gentle correction is usually all that is needed to address any stubborn behavior.
Be sure to keep a close eye on your Basset’s ears to prevent any infections or wax build-up. Mites can be attracted to this part of his anatomy, that should always be kept clean inside and out. Special care is also needed with their skin folds and droopy eyes, to keep them clean and free of foreign matter and mucus. This unique breed is one of a few with a type of genetic dwarfism; the Dachshund and Bulldog are two others in this group.
My Basset grew up with our two children, playing with them in our fenced yard and sharing the sofa with them during his lethargic, indoor hours. He expends very little energy when not outside in play mode. We have protected his back and joints throughout these years with his dog foam ramps and portable dog ramps, used in various locations in the house and to get into the car.. He is especially fond of his bed dog ramp to access the children’s beds. And he is forever traveling from floor to sofa on his large dog ramp to sit near the children.
This has helped us immeasurably to keep him from doing any jumping. The concern is always the potential damage to his spine, hips or legs. Even puppies can suffer permanent injuries unless care is taken to prevent this cause. We feed him a nutritious diet to keep him trim and fit and to prevent bloat.
Preventive care has served us well on behalf of our 4-legged friend, who, at 7 years old is still enjoying a healthy, balanced lifestyle, keeping him strong and robust and eager to take his daily walks no matter the weather. We try to give back to him what he gives to us, his human family.
