Small Dogs – Big Hearts
Small dogs range in size from toys and miniatures up to sturdy dogs in the 22-26 pound category. They cover a large and varied spectrum of breeds that are low maintenance to those requiring frequent grooming.
Some of these are low shedders and some are a constant cause for concern about clothing, carpets, furniture and everywhere else, in the most extreme cases. Is this an important issue for you?
If you can get past the, “Oh, he’s so cute” aspect of all this, when looking for the dog that is best for you, you can move on to the other considerations for you and your new “best buddy”. You will probably want to know the full-grown size of the dog you choose. If you think you might want to breed your dog, learn about the birthing challenges of some of the smaller breeds. Some require assistance and intervention in the process because of their size, and their litters will be small.
What is your lifestyle? That will influence the questions you ask and your ultimate choice. Do you prefer a dog that will be a good watchdog, alerting you to strangers with a bark or a growl? Some breeds are protective, but not overtly so. For some of you allergy sufferers this can be a major concern. You will be glad to know that many smaller breeds are less likely to have this dander problem. Other questions that may be relevant: Will this dog get along well with children? Is he a wise choice for living with other dogs (possibly both cats and dogs)?
Be honest with yourself about your needs and temperament when deciding on the breed for you. Avoid most pet stores in your search, as too many of them deal with “puppy mills” for their puppies. Rather, inquire about reputable breeders who can answer your questions and fulfill your need for a healthy, well-bred dog with the correct papers for your new pet. If you opt for a shelter or a rescue dog, get as much information as you can about a dog that may soon be a new member of your family.
I have personally found so much to love and appreciate with each addition to my “pack”. Ours is special time spent together on walks, in our games, in our “conversations”, and in the special bonds strengthened, as they gnaw on their chew toys, and I sit here with my ever-present cup of coffee. When I am working at my desk they are either at my feet or on their Puppy Stairs nearby.
When my dogs look at me with that smile on their faces (and some dogs do have smiling expressions and personalities), and wag their tails or bodies with all their being, ours is an unmistakable heart connection. It is an awesome thing to reflect on the powerful bond that exists between pets and their owners.
Their pet ramps and dog steps are always there for them whether I am home or away, giving them easy access to chairs and their favorite places on the sofa where they often sit next to me. At bedtime they easily and safely reach the bed close to me, using their dog ramp and pet stairs, as they do throughout the day.
