The clownish Pug is a charming, fun-loving companion, who aspires only to be by your side or, preferably, in your lap. One of the largest toy breeds, he still weighs in at between 14 and 18 lbs. as an adult. That compact, muscular body is a solid mass of personality!
This breed dates back to the royalty of ancient China, and the Pug still enjoys being the regal center of attention! Bred to be generally an indoor dog and companion, he will find his way into your heart early in your acquaintance. His distinctive appearance includes a compressed and wrinkled face, flat muzzle, short nose and that curly tail set high on his back. Although your special friend will require regular exercise, he doesn’t do well when there is too much physical stress placed on him, especially in extreme temperatures (high or low) or in humid conditions. It is helpful to provide shady places for him to cool down, and sufficient water to keep him hydrated. Try to avoid exercise times that will automatically expose him to excessive weather conditions. You will be able to notice signs of his becoming winded when you are taking your walk. “Moderation” is definitely the key to his physical activities.
Due to your Pug’s slight underbite, his teeth tend towards overcrowding. Regular brushing of his teeth is a given to maintain a healthy mouth. Some of the more pronounced health issues for Pugs are breathing, respiratory and snoring problems. (Some of the finest members of society snore, don’t they?) A serious genetic health concern, characterized by seizures and a number of other symptoms, is encephalitis. There seems little that can be done to reverse this rapidly accelerating disease. Another affliction known to affect Pugs is epilepsy. This is very treatable with appropriate medications, as it is with humans. Due to their specific health concerns, especially respiratory and encephalitis concerns, it is not recommended to breed Pugs with other breeds.
