Dog Grooming you can Master
If you are able to bathe your dog and have chosen to make this a regular part of your pet care, this can be another way to bond with your best friend. Part of this process should include trimming his nails prior to getting into his bath water. You are only going to clip the tips of his nails, using a sharp nail trimmer. There are “safety” trimmers available that help insure you will not be cutting the “quick” of your pet’s nails.
You can add brushing your dog’s fur before bathing him to remove any matted places and dead hair. Some breeds require this more than others, depending on the type of coat. Use only thinning shears for safety and efficiency. Unless your pet requires an elaborate grooming style, you can do this step-by-step. A lot depends on the breed and activity level of your dog in making the decision to bathe him more or less often.
Never use human shampoo on your pet, a special dog shampoo will be required to maintain the pH balance in your pets coat. The process can be mastered taking a gentle, firm approach to win your dog’s trust and make him feel more secure. Use treats if needed for additional enticement. When he is clean and well rinsed, be sure to clean carefully around his eyes with a soft, moist cotton ball. Clean his ears as well, as a part of your routine. In time this becomes easier and more comfortable to do.
Brushing your dog’s teeth should be a regular aspect of his hygiene program. A compact rubber fingertip toothbrush is best for small dogs and a children’s toothbrush for larger breeds, using flavored canine toothpaste. Your pet will soon become accustomed to your gentle approach to his hygiene regimen. Keep in mind that bacteria in a dog’s mouth can spread, causing other internal health problems, as with humans.
