The “pack leader” is usually easy to identify, with his female companion close behind, as nature intended; their bond is clear and unquestioned it, but what happens when new members are introduced to this family unit?

 Suddenly two additional members are added to the family structure, with the usual taunting and teasing antics of these younger dogs. All remains the same with the number one male; his position is secure until he ages and is in fragile health, and is no longer able to be an effective leader.

 Unable to physically command the respect he once enjoyed, he finds himself in daily competition to regain his place in the line of succession. Trouble is brewing in paradise; he is put in his place for his time and efforts; that place is at the opposite end of where he began in his youth. The new order of things acknowledges the leadership of the spunky, younger male dog.

 The younger ones, joined by the original female, are not to be bullied by original “top dog”. As in the wild, this drama plays out, as it should, with each dog’s unique personality expressing itself in this family setting.

 There are interludes of peaceful co-existence and displays of affection by all pack members towards their fallen leader. To their “people”, it is gratifying at these times, as this process unfold in their dogs’ world. All their pets are loved and nurtured with equal devotion. It takes these caregivers to provide the best environment for them all.

 To this end, each member of the pack is now benefiting from the dog ramps and pet stairs, giving them all easy access to beds and sofas. For the younger ones it is romp and play time, as they safely ascend and descend, using them throughout the day. And for the once-undisputed leader, it represents a boost to his status, while protecting his frail body on his own journey to be close to his human family.

 I know this family and am continually humbled by the care and dedication this has demonstrated to me, in the ways that humans can interact with their pets for the best outcome possible.
